DashCam Support
Answers to the questions we get asked most, and a way to reach a human if none of them fit. DashCam - FREE is made by MAIN OÜ, an Estonian software company.
Cannot find your answer below? Write to us and tell us your device model, your iOS version, and what you were doing when the problem happened. We read every message.
Getting started
How do I start recording?
Mount your device securely with a clear view of the road, open DashCam, and tap the large red button. Grant the camera permission when iOS asks - the app cannot record without it. Set everything up before you drive, never while the vehicle is moving.
Why does the app ask for the microphone?
Only to record in-car audio alongside the video. It is optional: decline it and DashCam records silent video instead. You can change your mind later in Settings → DashCam on your device. Note that recording audio of other people is regulated differently from place to place - check the rules where you drive.
Why does the app ask for Photos access?
Only for the "Save to Photos" action, which copies a clip you choose into your photo library. It is Apple's add-only permission, so the app cannot read or browse your existing photos.
Does it record in the background or with the screen off?
No. iOS does not permit camera capture while an app is in the background or the screen is locked - that is a system restriction, not a DashCam limitation. Leave the app in the foreground while recording. Turn on the battery-saver screen dim if the bright display bothers you; it restores your normal brightness when you stop.
Recording problems
The preview is black
Check that the camera permission is granted in Settings → DashCam, that no other app is holding the camera, and that nothing is covering the lens. If you are trying it in the iOS Simulator, the preview is always black - the Simulator has no camera. Force-quit and reopen the app if the preview stays black after granting permission.
Recording stopped on its own
The usual causes are storage filling up, the battery running out, or the device overheating and thermally throttling. iOS may also interrupt capture for a system event. Keep the device cool and out of direct sun, keep it on power on long drives, and leave some free space. DashCam warns you when space runs low and can recycle your oldest drives automatically so recording continues.
The timestamp is wrong
The burned-in timestamp comes from your device's clock and time zone. Correct it in Settings → General → Date & Time on your device. Tap the timestamp in the app to cycle between ISO, US, European, and Asian date formats.
I am running out of space
Video is large. Delete drives you no longer need from the gallery (swipe a row), export the ones you want to keep, and consider enabling automatic recycling of the oldest drives so a long trip never stops unexpectedly.
Your recordings
Where are my recordings stored?
In the app's own storage area on your device. They are never uploaded - DashCam has no server. See the privacy policy.
How do I get a clip off my phone?
Open the gallery, select the drive, and use share to send it anywhere iOS supports, or use "Save to Photos" to copy it into your photo library and then handle it like any other video.
I deleted a recording by accident - can you recover it?
No. We never had a copy: nothing leaves your device. Once a recording is deleted from the app (by you or by automatic recycling) it is gone, unless it is present in a device backup you made yourself.
DashCam Pro
What is free and what is paid?
Recording, the gallery, sharing, saving to Photos, automatic storage recycling, and the timestamp are all free, and stay free. DashCam Pro is an optional subscription. See the app page for current pricing and the terms of use for the full subscription terms.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. On your device open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, select DashCam, and cancel. Your Pro features stay active until the end of the period you have already paid for. Cancel at least 24 hours before a period ends to avoid the next renewal. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
I paid but Pro is not active, or I got a new phone
Tap Restore Purchases in the app while signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with. If it still does not activate, write to us with your device model and iOS version.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us - we cannot issue or reverse a charge. Use Apple's Report a Problem page or contact Apple Support.
Privacy and data
Do you collect any data about me?
No. There is no account, no analytics, and no advertising in the app, and there is no server for data to go to. The full statement is in the privacy policy.
Does it track my location?
No. DashCam never requests location access and does not record your position, speed, or route.
